Is Midlife Crisis A Denial Of Aging?

Yes and no – more “no” than “yes.”  I think it is more accurate to describe a midlife crisis as an intense period in which men and women often try awkwardly to grasp at opportunities.  This may appear to be hanging on to youth (car, young lover, new whatever), and perhaps it is, but they are also trying to take advantage of opportunities that will not be presented again.  For many people, midlife feels like a “last chance” (which increases the sense of urgency)and that is a denial of aging, but it can also be a way to make aging feel more acceptable.
