Sandwich Generation

The sandwich generation is the group of adult children who are caught in a lifecycle squeeze – caring for older parents and younger children at the same time. The burden varies in difficulty. Much depends on:

1. the health of all the people involved (obviously illness and emergencies are terribly stressful, whether it is a child or elderly person).

2. the resources that can be used for everyone’s care (money, other siblings to share the work, good elder-care workers, doctors, nannies, preschools and retirement homes).

3. the coping skills of the responsible adults (not everyone can deal with the multiple stressors).

4. the way that the caregiver sees the situation (an opportunity to care for parents vs. an unwelcome responsibility for people from whom they are estranged).
