Fake It ‘Til You Make It
Sometimes, authenticity is not the answer. Usually, it is. Many of us spend our lifetimes trying to get closer and closer to whatever feels like ‘the real me.” But there times when we make exceptions. Sometimes, the answer is, “Fake it ‘til you make it.” This means, practice the behaviors NOW that you expect to come more naturally later on. I’ve given this advice to beginning clinicians but it applies to dating or starting a new job, or meeting different people. Imagine your confidence level at this job, relationship, or new situation in six months or a year – you will be comfortable and knowledgeable. So, be that version of you. You aren’t cheating; you are looking ahead.
