Together – Apart

We read an interesting article for class today.  It described how our Western (especially North American) culture espouses certain values such as autonomy, independence, self-reliance, personal ambition and effectiveness. There isn’t anything wrong with these values but they are all about the individual and personal striving – not about relationships or community.  Other societies believe that values ought to be the other way around – relationships, family and society first with individualism second.

The point made by the authors (S.Guisinger and S. Blatt), and worth repeating, is that we can look at growth at following two lines of development – self and other – and we ought to attempt to develop both, not just one or the other: attend to our own needs and wishes and remain responsible to others as well.
