10 Great Topics for Humorous Writing Exercises

For about 8 years, I belonged to a writing group and the meetings were always great fun.  We didn’t usually read our own work but instead, we made up writing assignments, did them during the meeting, then read them aloud to each other and discussed the work. Writing quickly for a short period was wonderful practice – it taught me not to take the work so seriously and just have fun.  The harder part was figuring out topics to write about for half an hour.

Well, if you are interested in trying this type of exercise, here are some topics.  On July 22, I wrote a post filled with writing exercise topics that I had collected from the spam on my website.  This list comes from the same place; I’m still cleaning the 20,000+ comments that I’ve received on this blog (before I realized that I had control over my ‘controls’) and there is a ton of hilarious spam.

The following topics will make good writing exercises.  I think that they lend themselves to humorous scenes or essays but you may see them differently.

 1. Belly button pain, 2. the dishwasher isn’t draining, 3. Disneyland coupons, 4. Jennifer Beal, 5. Brazilian waxing, 6. jobs in Jacksonville, 7. uses for diapers, 8. self-tanning, 9. pest control, and of course, 10. colon cleanse.

Have fun.  I have more spam and will come up with more exercises next week.
