The World Through Your Eyes

“If you carry a hammer long enough, everything begins to look like a nail.”

“If you carry a hammer”…You tend to use whatever you carry, whether that is a cell phone, a chip on your shoulder or compassion.  That’s why it’s important to examine what we carry and unload the burdens of dragging our own junk.  It’s easier to leave a cell phone at home than a bad attitude.

“…everything begins to look like a nail.”  We often find what we expect to find. We filter out the rest and see only what confirms our existing world view.  If you expect people to like you, when you meet new people you will probably think that they do like you (whether or not that’s totally true).  And your odds go up of being correct because you will, in return, behavior in friendlier ways (making them like you, fulfilling your beliefs, and creating your reality).

If you are an early career therapist, you will find “What Do I Say?” an essential, comforting addition to your professional library.  You can purchase it at http://www.amazon.com
