Defense Mechanisms

In conversations, many people toss out the phrase, “you’re being defensive”.  Do you want to know what that really means?  The Famous Freuds, that father/daughter team of Sigmund and Anna, developed the notion of defense mechanisms and we still use their concepts.  Defense mechanisms are not necessarily bad and their purpose is to protect the ego from anxiety, shame or guilt.  I’ll briefly describe the popular defense mechanisms today and their less celebrated cousins  on Monday.

Denial – Everyone’s favorite. It is the refusal to accept an unpleasant fact.

Projection – One person attributes his unacceptable traits, attitudes, faults or impulses to someone else.

Repression canadian pharmacy cheap viagra – When disturbing material (events, feelings, happenings) are denied entry into consciousness.  This can happen in cases of abuse, witnessing a dangerous situation

Regression – Returning to an earlier level of development (you feel this way when you get into an argument with your parent)
