Non-fiction Writing Tips

I’ve been far more successful with my nonfiction writing (but that doesn’t seem to stop me from tapping out more fiction) and I’ve been reading about fiction writing.  Here are some tips from fiction writing that helps nonfiction. I wish I could take credit for these ideas but most came from Sol Stein (Stein on Writing)

Tips for nonfiction (derived from fiction writing)

1. You need more than black and white facts to engage the reader

2. Readers want images, stories, anecdotes, and characterization

3. Keep facts precise

4. You don’t have to sacrifice accuracy to make nonfiction a bit more engaging

5. Stay clear about what data is anecdotal

6. Ask yourself, ‘what does my reader want (not just need, but want)’?
