Parents: How To Relate To Your Young Adult Child With ADD

A. Rostain, M.D. wrote a recent article with tips for parents who have children with ADD or ADHD. He suggests new ways to relate as the children become young adults. Here are his main points:

1. Think of yourself

as a consultant and collaborator rather than as their manager.

2. Strive to reach this new relationship but don’t kid yourself – it will be difficult for both parties.

Handling problems

3. Recognize that he/she may have problems with time management, organization, self-regulation, judgment and decision making.

4. Be realistic as to whether your child can manage entirely on his own or will need help in some areas. Be clear about those weaker areas and how you will be involved.

5. Recognize your child’s strengths.

6. You can problem solve together and you can both agree on what role you will play but,  your young adult must ‘own ‘ the problem and its solutions.
