I think that the steps from feeling to appropriate expression go something like this:

1. What do you feel? It is smart to know what you feel so ask yourself what emotions you are experiencing, i.e. Am I angry, disappointed, scared, happy….

2. What caused these feelings? This is the next question to ask yourself because you will make different decisions depending on your answer. If a neighbor provoked your anger by setting fire to the cat, you

will take different action than if you were remembering how your 4th grade gym teacher called you clumsy.

Now you have a lot of good information.

3. What do you do with your feelings? Feelings can remain private or be shared – your choice. Some people are unskilled at letting others know how they feel. Others people’s mouths runneth over and they share way too much about their emotions. Which one are you?

4. Do you share? With whom? How much? When? In what form (screaming, email, conversation, etc.)? There is quite a difference between knowing what you feel and deciding to share those feelings with others. This is your choice and don’t rush – you can still find your 4th grade gym teacher on Facebook tomorrow when you have decided what to say.
