There are many reasons to NOT hover too closely over your college kids and here is another. 300 undergrads were asked about their mothers’ parenting behaviors and then rated their own autonomy, competence, and ability to get along with others.
The finding? High maternal control contributes to the young adult having more depression and less belief in his/her own autonomy and competence. These young people are also less satisfied with life.
When kids have been told what to do, what is best for them, and who they are, their self confidence drops.
