Chanukah Gifts

At sundown tonight, Chanukah begins.  Although it is a minor Jewish holiday, kids love it best because many households give the children 8 presents  – one each day after the family lights a candle in the menorah. The presents are generally quite small but, of course, children like receiving things so it can work as a relatively inexpensive tradition.

When I was a child, my mother added to the fun by hiding the presents. I would run around finding them. As I got old enough to read, the treasure hunt was accompanied by written clues. That was even more fun. I did the same with my daughters, coming up with elaborate poems (fancier poems than the gifts themselves).  It stretched out the excitement and delight and continued a wonderful tradition.

Happy Chanukah
