Business People vs. Psychologists
I had an interesting conversation with a former student who earned his Psy.D. in clinical psychology and then went to business school. He was talking about the different attitudes of psychologists and leaders in business. When you read this, please remember that it isn’t black and white, but you will be able to see the differences in emphasis. Here are some observations:
Business people: Results oriented
Psychologists: Process oriented
Business people: Hate uncertainty; believe in control
Psychologists: Live with uncertainty; don’t think that control is all it’s cracked up to be
Business people: Control feels right, good. Lack of control feels helpless, wrong.
Psychologists: There is much that we cannot control; change what we can, accept what we cannot.
I think that we could learn a lot from each other and move an inch or two away from the direction we favor and toward the other idea.
